Jim Whittaker, First American to Summit Mt. Everest, Dies at 97
Jim Whittaker, the first American to summit Mt. Everest who then helped build one of the world’s most popular outdoor brands, has died at 97. In 1990, Whittaker organized a trip to Everest with American, Soviet and Chinese teams in an effort at peace just before the end of the Cold War.
