Desmond Lee on new measures to tackle school bullying
The Ministry of Education’s new measures to tackle school bullying in Singapore aren’t just about stricter rules but about shaping long-term behaviour and culture, Minister for Education Desmond Lee said. The ministry on Wednesday (Apr 15) announced a slew of new measures to tackle bullying — from a new online reporting platform to harsher punishments, including suspension and caning.

Speaking to the media, Mr Lee said a “whole of society” effort is required to tackle bullying and to foster a culture where children can learn, grow and experience life safely. “It’s a culture where, when things happen, parents don’t see other parents as adversaries. They don’t see their classmates’ children or the perpetrators of hurtful behaviour as adversaries to be dealt with in a vindictive way,” he said.

“Discipline is needed but ultimately, it’s an educative and restorative process that we want to incorporate firmly into the whole cycle of dealing with hurtful behaviour and bullying.” Read more here: https://ift.tt/adgBupx
