Minister Roger Alexander Calls For Stronger Parental Responsibility
Discussions aimed at empowering and supporting parents and care-givers were held on Friday during the National Parenting Seminar hosted by the Ministry of Homeland Security in collaboration with several stakeholders.

At the opening ceremony at the Bishop Anstey High School East Auditorium on Friday, Minister of Homeland Security Roger Alexander delivered a stark message to parents, questioning the state of society.

“Parents, have we, because of our behaviour, have we destroyed our society? Have we destroyed our children? Did we destroy our country?”

Minister Alexander reminded parents of their responsibility to their children, lamenting that some are neglecting their duties.

“They ask when last you checked the homework of some of those children. I could not even imagine that. How do you leave home, attend school and come back, and your parents did not even check the book to see if you did anything for the day? So then, when you don’t do that, they end up with one book. That’s the book they have to visit the station with to sign to account for themselves.”

Minister Alexander also shared on the importance of positive moral and spiritual values.

“I grew up in an era where moral and spiritual values was important. I don’t know if that still exists. You will try with your own children to bring them up in the manner in which you see fit: respectable to society, obeys authority, the foundation. They say the house that is built on a rock is difficult to move. We don’t build the house no more.”

Speaking to TTT News at the Parenting Seminar, Minister of the People, Social Development and Family Services Vandana Mohit said her Ministry was pleased to support the initiative.

“I’m very happy to partner with the Ministry of Homeland Security. I think the nation waited for this for a long period of time, and we are happy to partner because, of course, we have a big name, Ministry of the People, Social Development and Family Services. And one of the most critical things for us is to deal with families, build on families, and of course, it all ties into school, social sector, national security. So we’re happy to partner, and we look forward to more like these and more partnerships like these.”

The seminar is being hosted in collaboration with the National Parent Teacher Association, the Trinidad and Tobago Association of Psychologists, and the Trinidad and Tobago Association of Social Workers.
