‘Win-win’: Australian PM on agreement with Singapore to protect mutual energy security
Singapore and Australia are working towards a legally binding protocol on economic resilience and essential supplies under their free trade agreement, with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese calling it a “win-win” on Friday (Apr 10), as both countries moved to strengthen fuel security amid global disruptions caused by the Middle East conflict.
Speaking at a joint press conference with Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, Mr Albanese said the partnership is critical — with about 25% of Australia’s fuel refined in Singapore, while Australia supplies roughly 32% of Singapore’s LNG.
Mr Albanese added: “The best way to deal with this global crisis is indeed to work together as partners and as neighbours, and I look forward to continuing to engage with the prime minister. We had a very wide-ranging discussion today, and that’s what friends can do.”
