US and Iran agree on 2-week ceasefire as talks set for Islamabad
The US and Iran have on Wednesday (Apr 8) agreed to a temporary two-week ceasefire, brokered by Pakistan, halting US attacks in exchange for Iran reopening the Strait of Hormuz. CNA’s Nick Harper reports from Washington on the fragile truce, Iran’s 10-point proposal, and upcoming talks set for Friday in Islamabad.

Key sticking points include Iran’s demands for the removal of all US sanctions dating back 26 years, withdrawal of US troops from the region, and no commitment to surrendering enriched uranium. The Strait of Hormuz, through which 20 per cent of the world’s crude oil passes, will be open under Iranian military management, though details on safe passage remain unclear. Both sides face significant hurdles in the coming two weeks to finalize a lasting agreement.
