Rowan Colin “Creepy” Wilson is being remembered not only for his remarkable talent on the bike, but for his pioneering role in Trinidad and Tobago’s cycling community — inspiring generations of young athletes.
Wilson died on Friday after sustaining critical injuries during a crash at the Easter International Cycling Grand Prix at Skinner Park. Reports indicate that he attempted to avoid a fallen cyclist but collided with the fencing lining the track, suffering severe injuries to his neck.
Affectionately known as “Creepy,” he earned his nickname for his ability to quietly creep up on breakaways during races. His impressive career included winning the Elite Men National Criterium Title in 2015 and capturing the President’s Cup twice for overall points dominance.
Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs, Phillip Watts, described Wilson as a passionate athlete whose commitment to excellence defined his sporting career. The Minister noted that his passing represents a profound loss to the sporting fraternity and extended condolences to Wilson’s family, friends, and teammates.
The Trinidad and Tobago Cycling Federation also expressed deep sorrow, saying the loss is being felt throughout the cycling community, as they reflected on Wilson’s enduring passion for the sport.
Meanwhile, the Sports Company of Trinidad and Tobago (SporTT) extended condolences as organisers continue to honour Mr. Wilson’s legacy during the remainder of the Grand Prix competition.
SporTT Chairman, Kester Lendor, said that as the event continues, it does so with a shared sense of respect for Mr. Wilson’s legacy. He reaffirmed SporTT’s commitment to fully understanding the circumstances surrounding the incident, while ensuring the safety and wellbeing of all athletes, officials, and patrons.
