Myanmar's coup leader who set off a brutal civil war becomes president | BBC News

On 1 February, 2021 General Min Aung Hlaing launched his coup against the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi in Myanmar.

Today, in the first sitting in five years, he’s been elected by the new parliament to be the new president.

But, with the new parliament made up of mostly loyalists and armed forces, questions remain over whether his appointment will be more of the same, with hope for change gone.
