PM Wong warns of global energy crunch from Middle East conflict, convenes ministerial task force
Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong warned on Thursday (Apr 2) of “severe consequences” if Middle Eastern energy sources and supply routes remain constrained for an extended period.

He announced the convening of the Homefront Crisis Ministerial Committee to coordinate a national response. It is chaired by Coordinating Minister for National Security K Shanmugam and advised by Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong.

Mr Wong outlined Singapore’s response so far, saying that the government is taking active steps to strengthen Singapore’s energy and supply chain resilience.

He added that Singapore must also be prepared for further escalation in the coming days and weeks. Even after the US eventually ends its military campaign, the geopolitical situation in the Middle East will have been adversely affected, he said.

Mr Wong added that while Singapore cannot avoid the impact of global upheavals, it has the plans and capabilities to navigate this, as it has done in past shocks such as the Asian financial crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic. Read more: https://ift.tt/JpaQE26
