T&T Hosts Two Major International Cycling Events This Easter Weekend
Trinidad and Tobago is set to make cycling history, hosting not one but two major international events this Easter weekend.

The Easter International Grand Prix has long been one of the Caribbean’s most prestigious cycling events. But this year, it takes on even greater significance, elevated as part of the Caribbean Track Cycling Championships and the Americas Track Cup Series, both sanctioned by the UCI, the sport’s world governing body.

Trinidad and Tobago last hosted the Caribbean Track Championships in 2022. Now, just four years later, the twin-island republic gets the nod again. And for the Copa Bipista, a brand-new continental series designed to develop track cycling across the Americas, T&T hosts the very first event in the series.

Over 100 athletes from eleven countries, including Canada, Cuba, Jamaica, the USA, Mexico and Sweden, will compete this weekend.

The manager of Team Jamaica shared his thoughts on the event.

“Jamaica has always been a supporter of the Easter Grand Prix for years. And for us, being able to come to Trinidad every year is a plus as we try to develop our youngsters. And we see the Easter Grand Prix as a gateway. I mean, now it’s linked with the Copa Cup, which again, as we look forward to the 2028 Olympics in LA, it gives a good opportunity for our riders to be a part of this event as we look to gain points that will lead towards our qualification.”

Flying the red, white and black will be Kyra Williams and Phoebe Sandy for the women and Akil Campbell, Darnell James, Tariq Woods, Liam Trepte, Adam Alexander and Jadian Neaves for the men.

Eleven local cycling clubs will also be participating.

T&T cyclist Kyra Williams shared her excitement on her maiden ride on home soil.

“I’m really happy to be on the national team for the first time in Trinidad and Tobago representing. So it’s really, truly a blessing to be here.”

The action gets underway this Friday, April 4th, at Skinner Park and the National Cycling Centre in Couva.
