Scrap Iron Dealers Demand Police Action On Rising Copper Theft
The leadership of the Trinidad and Tobago Scrap Iron Dealers Association says enforcement is needed to eliminate the theft of copper and other materials by unscrupulous individuals.
They are pleading with the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service to enforce the laws already in place.
During a press conference on Wednesday, the President of the Trinidad and Tobago Scrap Iron Dealers Association, Alan Ferguson, sought to separate his group from the continued reported theft of copper and other materials from private homes and public infrastructure.
He referenced the recent theft of over $100,000 worth of copper wire from former President of Trinidad and Tobago Anthony Carmona’s private residence.
“I don’t want nobody come now after we’re doing all this work to put no blame on the Association. No blame on the Association because we’re working hard to fix this. And it’s just people just don’t care. Not even to enforce law.”
Mr. Ferguson said this issue has been brought up by TTSIDA on numerous occasions over the years to the leadership of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service.
“We warn them about this theft. We warn them about what we see now, what’s taking place all over Trinidad and Tobago so you could understand. We know that if you don’t fix it, or you don’t enforce the law, a lot of things will take place that isn’t supposed to be taking place right now as we speak.”
He did not put all the blame on the TTPS, as he also referenced what he called unscrupulous scrap iron dealers who are buying materials at higher prices and without proper checks and balances.
“These fellas who stealing, they can’t steal nothing because they have no market to sell it. And this is the problem we having, the people who buying and that is why we need the authority to come down on all these people all over Trinidad and Tobago. The people who open up yards without license, as the Vice President just mentioned. It’s plenty.”
Mr. Ferguson said his Association is willing to work with the police to bring the criminals to justice.
“So I am saying to Trinidad and Tobago, anybody you all see stealing or doing anything in reference to copper or any other material, report it. Report it to the police and if they’re doing nothing, report it to the Association and the Association will take up the necessary things to expose everybody who’s supposed to get exposed because we need to do it. We have children, we have wives. We have people that depend on this industry to live.”
