CNA PM Wong calls for ‘plurilateral arrangements’ to deal with new global realities

“Even large powers will find that a world where the strong do as they please is ultimately more dangerous for all. When rules give way to raw power, order breaks down, and no country — big or small — is truly secure,” said Prime Minister Lawrence Wong in his keynote speech at the Boao Forum for Asia in Hainan, China on Thursday (Mar 26).
He said there is a need for new ways of cooperation between countries amid a “worrying breakdown” of the institutions and norms that have long anchored the global system.
Speaking at the event which is considered Asia’s equivalent of the Davos World Economic Forum, Mr Wong called for “plurilateral arrangements”, where smaller groups of like-minded partners work together, rather than rely solely on traditional multilateral forums.
This does not mean abandoning multilateralism, he said, but complementing it, while continuing to strengthen and reform global institutions such as the WTO and the United Nations.
