Many islands around the world are happy to stay on the beaten track: sandy beaches, sun-drenched shores, and the same tourism-dependent story. But in southern China’s Hainan Province, another future is taking shape. By connecting scientific research with new industries and rolling out island-wide special customs operations, China is betting on Hainan to build an economy that goes beyond tourism.
In this episode of Architecture Intelligence, we journey to the Yazhou Bay Science and Technology Innovation Platform in Hainan. Here, scientists and engineers are bringing the deep sea indoors – using giant wave pools, ship simulators and advanced laboratories to test technologies that could unlock the mysteries of the ocean. But building this platform so close to the sea was far from easy. “There’s a lot of silt down there – think of it like a piece of tofu,” said the project’s chief engineer.
From replacing the soft soil foundation to hoisting a colossal structure in place, every step has pushed engineering to its limits. Let’s take a look at how they are reshaping the future of marine science and transforming Hainan from a tropical getaway into a hub for deep-sea innovation.
