Minister Nicholas Morris Praises PM’s CARICOM Speech As ‘Much Needed’

Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister Nicholas Morris says the issues highlighted by Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar during her address at the 50th Regular Meeting of CARICOM were needed.

Minister Morris shared the main outcomes of Trinidad and Tobago’s participation in the Lower House on Friday.

Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister Nicholas Morris said Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar gave one of the most forthright speeches ever given by a head of government in CARICOM.

“The Prime Minister’s dignified leadership in addressing complex and sensitive matters affecting the region was recognised throughout the Caribbean as being much needed, especially the call for enhanced accountability, transparency, and institutional responsiveness within regional mechanisms and the call for CARICOM to be a principled, impartial, and credible voice for all the peoples of the Caribbean Community.”

Minister Morris said a major highlight was a bilateral meeting with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

“One of the key highlights of the meeting was an invitation from the United States President Donald Trump for our Prime Minister to meet with him at the upcoming Shield of the Americas Summit, scheduled for March 7th, 2026, Miami, Florida, which the Prime Minister has graciously accepted. The meeting served to advance several of the issues on the bilateral agenda between Trinidad and Tobago and the United States of America in the areas of energy cooperation, trade, hemispheric security, and regional prosperity, as both countries agreed to continue discussions in Miami on March 7th, 2026.”

He said the Prime Minister also held bilateral discussions with regional counterparts, including Suriname and Jamaica.

“Discussions centred on energy security, transportation, education, and training in the energy sector, agriculture, as well as opportunities for cooperation in the area of health. The Honourable Prime Minister also met with Dr. The Most Honourable Andrew Holness, Prime Minister of Jamaica. Discussions centred on immigration matters and cooperation in matters of national security. Prime Minister Holness thanked Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar for her government’s support after Hurricane Melissa. Prime Minister Persad-Bissessar also reaffirmed Trinidad and Tobago’s commitment to partnering with Jamaica.”

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar delivered a speech at the opening ceremony of the 50th Regular Meeting of CARICOM in St. Kitts and Nevis on Tuesday.
