CNA Budget 2026: PM Lawrence Wong responds to WP questions on fiscal marksmanship

Singapore Prime Minister and Finance Minister Lawrence Wong responded to the Workers’ Party’s (WP) questions on fiscal marksmanship with regard to the Budget surplus. FY2025 saw a larger-than-expected surplus of S$15.1 billion, which is more than double the initial estimate.

In his Budget wrap-up speech, Mr Wong explained the difficulties of forecasting, and rejected claims that the government painted a doom-and-gloom outlook for electoral advantage.

He said Singapore’s unexpected growth was due to joint efforts from the government and Singapore’s workers. “Let us not belittle these contributions just to score a political point,” he said. #singapore #sgnews
