CNA Trump defends his first year back in office in his 2026 State of the Union address

US President Donald Trump has delivered his first State of the Union address for his second term. Over almost two hours, the former reality TV star delivered both shock and drama. Facing low approval ratings and fearing losses in November’s mid-term elections, Mr Trump sought to paint this as the golden age of America. Even when talking about the Supreme Court’s repudiation of his signature tariff policy, Mr Trump struck a softer tone, calling the ruling “unfortunate”. Meanwhile, his speech was light on foreign policy – he made little mention of China or Russia, but briefly made his case for a possible attack on Iran. Jagruti Dave reports from Washington DC.
