Ethan Baker, the mayor of Troy, Michigan and former Republican state House candidate, told Al Jazeera that Trump’s State of the Union speech painted a mixed economic picture.
He acknowledged falling inflation and stock market gains but noted residents still feel cost-of-living pressures.
On tariffs, Baker supports the president’s right to use them as a tool but warned they hit Michigan’s auto industry hard.
He observed Trump was more restrained on the issue than in recent days.
Regarding immigration, Baker stressed public safety is his priority.
He said the issue is complex, with some residents fearing federal enforcement while others see its value, and called for consensus reforms.
On Republican election fears, Baker said Trump’s speech had good moments but noted midterms are far off and much can change.
Finally, on Iran, Baker praised rare bipartisan unity against Iran obtaining a nuclear weapon and suggested Trump’s military buildup may be a bargaining tool for peace through strength.
