Global National: Feb. 22, 2026 | Mexican drug lord ‘El Mencho’ killed in military operation

Canadians in Puerto Vallarta are being told to shelter in place as violence escalates across the region. The Mexican government says roadblocks with burning vehicles have been set up by armed groups clashing with federal authorities. The violence comes after Mexican cartel leader Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes — known as ‘El Mencho’— was killed by in a military operation. Skylar Peters reports from Mexico.

Less than two weeks after the Tumbler Ridge tragedy, the small community in northern B.C. is again facing threats. The RCMP says it is working with local police to make sure everyone stays safe, but the risk has prevented a memorial service for the shooting’s youngest victim. Heather Yourex-West reports.
