Stone Pelting, Clashes Between Two Communities After Vandalism at Jabalpur Temple
Tension flared in the Sihora area of Jabalpur after a dispute during an aarti at a Durga temple escalated into violence. The incident took place at Ward No. 5, Azad Chowk, where a group of youths allegedly vandalised the temple premises, triggering unrest in the area.
According to reports, objections were raised over the loud sound of loudspeakers being played during the aarti. The disagreement reportedly led to a heated exchange between members of two communities. The situation soon spiralled out of control, with groups gathering at the spot and incidents of stone-pelting reported.
Eyewitness accounts said that several individuals took to the streets carrying sticks and stones, leading to chaos in the locality. The Durga temple and a mosque, identified as Madina Masjid Ahle Sunnat, are situated opposite each other in the area, and officials said tensions had been building, especially with the beginning of the month of Ramzan.
Heavy police deployment was made immediately after the incident was reported. Senior officials, including the Inspector General of Jabalpur Range, DIG, District Collector, and Superintendent of Police, reached the spot and brought the situation under control.
Police said more than two dozen individuals involved in the violence have been identified, and over 15 people have been taken into custody so far. Authorities are also preparing preventive action against those involved, including the seizure of vehicles linked to the accused.
The situation in Azad Chowk, Sihora, remains tense but under control, with security forces maintaining a strong presence in the area.
