Ilia Malinin’s Reflects on His Free Skate
Ilia Malinin’s free skate program at the Milan Cortina Olympics was supposed to be a coronation of a superstar who has pushed the boundaries of men’s figure skating.
Instead, the Olympic gold medal that seemed in his grasp slipped away in stunning fashion on Feb. 13 when he fell twice during the performance, which sunk him to eighth overall after he had won the short program. The heavy favorite to win gold left the competition without an individual medal after having won back-to-back world championships leading up to the Olympics.
“Of course it didn’t go the way I wanted to, but we can’t look at that now, and all I have to do is just learn from my mistakes there and push to see how I can improve in the future,” he said.
