CGTN Uruguay sees long-term complementarity with China in beef trade

With a population of just 3.5 million and grasslands covering around 60 percent of the country, Uruguay offers nearly two acres of pasture per head of cattle. This is a natural advantage that continues to appeal to Chinese consumers. That strength is now on display in China as President Yamandú Orsi begins his state visit, accompanied by senior agriculture officials and the president of Uruguay’s National Meat Institute. In 2025, Uruguay’s beef exports to China exceeded $860 million, marking a 14 percent year-on-year increase. Gaston Scayola, president of the National Meat Institute, told CGTN that smoother trade procedures and deeper bilateral cooperation are helping bring high-quality South American beef to Chinese dining tables, just in time for Spring Festival demand.
