U.S. President Donald Trump has said the situation with Iran is “in flux” after ordering a “big armada” into the Middle East, triggering fears of a direct military showdown. On January 26, Trump claimed U.S. forces near Iran are “bigger than Venezuela,” as the USS Abraham Lincoln entered CENTCOM’s area of responsibility after sailing from the Asia-Pacific. Reports say Washington is also weighing a naval blockade to choke off Iran’s oil exports, echoing the Venezuela playbook that led to Nicolás Maduro’s capture. Iran has responded by deploying its Fattah and Ghadir attack submarines across the Persian Gulf, including near the Strait of Hormuz. While the White House insists strikes remain “on the table,” Trump has also said Tehran wants a deal. With Trump’s team split between diplomacy and regime-change strikes, the Middle East now stands on the brink of a dangerous U.S.–Iran confrontation.
