Ferry sinks off southern Philippines with 332 passengers; over 300 saved, 18 dead, search continues

A passenger ferry carrying nearly 360 people capsized off the southern Philippines on Sunday night, prompting a major search and rescue operation.
The MV Tricia Kirsten 3 had departed Zamboanga City to the island of Holo when survivors say it suddenly tilted, leaving passengers clinging to life in darkness.
Philippine Coast Guard, Navy and local rescue teams recovered most passengers, but several bodies were also retrieved from the water.
The incident marks the third major maritime distress call in the region within a week, underscoring ongoing safety challenges across the archipelago of more than 7,000 islands.

Al Jazeera’s Barnaby Lo reports from Manila.
