Al Jazeera English Millions in Brazil’s favelas live in fear under gang rule

As Brazil heads toward elections in 2026, issues like taxes, public spending and the economy are all taking a back seat for millions of people who say they feel afraid on a daily basis.
Gangs or militias affect the lives of almost one-in-five people in the country, in areas where the state has no presence and violence is the norm.
