Israel has become the first country to formally recognize the self-declared Republic of Somaliland as an independent and sovereign state, prompting strong condemnation from Somalia and regional allies.

Somaliland’s President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi welcomed the move, saying Israel’s decision reflected “confidence in Somaliland’s demonstrated commitment to peace, stability and responsible governance.”

Somalia’s government called the recognition unlawful, while the African Union and Egypt warned it threatens regional stability.

In Mogadishu, residents took to the streets, rejecting the move and reaffirming Somalia’s unity.
