Mount Kenya’s melting peaks erode a symbol of national identity

For centuries, local communities revered Mount Kenya’s snowcap as the home of their god, Ngai.
Today, guides and hikers are witnessing the rapid and alarming loss of its ice.
Snow that once covered the mountain for months now appears only briefly near the peaks.
Historical accounts show the summit was once snow-covered year-round.
The mountain’s original name, Kirinyaga, referred to its black-and-white snowy appearance.
That defining feature, which gave Kenya its name, is disappearing within a generation.
The loss threatens not only the environment but also the country’s cultural identity.

Al Jazeera’s Malcolm Webb reports from Mount Kenya.
