Al Jazeera English Loss of glaciers puts Mount Kenya’s unique ecosystems at risk
The rapid loss of glaciers on Mount Kenya is threatening the mountain’s unique ecosystems.
Around 95% of the glaciers have disappeared due to climate change, cutting vital meltwater.
Highland forests have also been heavily reduced, with only a third of the original cover remaining.
Deforestation accelerated under colonial farming and continues to affect biodiversity.
Small-scale farmers face growing risks but are involved in forest restoration projects.
Rising temperatures and worsening fires are pushing plants and animals uphill.
Scientists warn ecosystems are shrinking towards extinction as habitats move upwards.
Al Jazeera’s Malcolm Webb reports from Mount Kenya.
