Australia is banning social media for children under the age of 16 from December 10.

Under-16s will no longer be allowed to have social media accounts, including X, Instagram and TikTok, all existing profiles must be deactivated, and they will not be able to set up new accounts.

The Australian government says the ban – a world-first policy popular with many parents – is aimed at protecting children from harmful content and other risks such as cyberbullying and grooming.

Some young campaigners have argued the ban disregards the rights of children.

And social media platforms have argued the ban will be ineffective, difficult to implement, could isolate vulnerable teenagers and drive others into dark corners of the internet
