Taiwan has unveiled a $40 billion supplementary defence budget to signal its determination to defend itself against mounting military pressure from China. President Lai Ching-te said the package is part of a broader plan to raise defence spending to around 5% of GDP by 2030, underlining Taipei’s response to U.S. calls for higher self-defence outlays and to Beijing’s expanding military activities near the island.
