Global NewsJapan plans to deploy missiles on island near Taiwan as dispute with China escalates
Japanese Defence Minister Koizumi Shinjiro announced Sunday that the country was “steadily advancing preparations” to deploy a medium-range surface-to-air guided missile unit at Camp Yonaguni as tensions between Japan and China continue to escalate.
The Defence Minister insisted this deployment would strictly be an act of deterrence and will not raise regional tensions. This announcement comes a few days after Japan scrambled fighter jets in response to a Chinese drone that flew between Taiwan and Japan’s westernmost island of Yonaguni.
China immediately criticized the move, calling it a “deliberate attempt to create regional tensions and provoke military confrontation.”
Japan and China’s relationship has deteriorated rapidly since Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said a Chinese attack on Taiwan could trigger a military response from Japan.
