UN climate talks hit a wall on fossil fuels, but other nations will step in: Oxford researcher

The United Nations climate summit (COP30) ended with a compromise deal struck on Saturday (Nov 22) that boosts finance for poorer nations but omits any reference to phasing out fossil fuels, despite pressure from Europe and several Latin American countries. In response to the lack of progress, Colombia and the Netherlands have announced a new international conference on the phase-out of fossil fuels, to be held in April 2026. Oxford researcher Injy Johnstone tells CNA’s Asia First that the omission exposes the limits of consensus-based climate diplomacy, as powerful petro states like Saudi Arabia continue to block stronger language on fossil fuels.
