Global News“Fake news”: Trump shuts down reporter on Saudi prince’srole in Jamal Khashoggi murder
U.S. President Donald Trump has contradicted the conclusions of various U.S. intelligence agencies on the role Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman had in the death of the Washington Post journalist in 2018.
“Fake news… He knew nothing about it,” Trump told a reporter who questioned and criticized bin Salman’s visit to the Oval Office on Tuesday.
Jamal Khashoggi, a U.S. resident who wrote opinion columns critical of bin Salman‘s policies, was killed and dismembered by a team of operatives linked to the prince in the Saudi Arabian consulate in Istanbul, reports by U.S. intelligence agencies found.
Without denying his involvement in orchestrating Khashoggi’s death, the Crown Prince offered his own response, saying: “Anyone that’s [lost] his life for no real purpose, or not in a legal way, [that is] painful for us in Saudi Arabia. We did all the right steps of investigation, etc. in Saudi Arabia… And we’re doing our best that this doesn’t happen again.”
