Global NewsICE pact: Canada, US, Finland partner to strengthen icebreakers for Arctic
Canadian Ambassador to the U.S. Kristen Hillman joined the U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem, along with Finland’s Economic Affairs Minister Sakari Puisto to sign a joint statement of intent to strengthen industrial cooperation to build and maintain icebreakers.
Formed in 2024, the Icebreaker Collaboration effort (ICE) is a trilateral agreement between the three countries to enhance collective capabilities to produce ice-breaking vessels.
“We need to invest in bringing our manufacturing back home to our American shores to thrive in the Arctic,” Noem said.
Hillmans said Chantier Davie, a Canadian firm, working through its shipyards in the U.S. would contribute to the United States’ arctic fleet renewal by building five icebreakers.
