Counting of votes for the crucial Bihar assembly elections began at 8am on Friday, with initial trends indicating the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is ahead in several seats.

Trends at 11.30 am showed the NDA leading in 190 seats and the Mahagathbandhan in 49. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) also crossed the 50-mark, leading in 84 seats.

Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav, who is the chief ministerial candidate of the Mahagathbandhan, is leading in Raghopur assembly. Singer Maithili Thakur, who is making her poll debut on a BJP ticket, is leading in Alinagar.

The results for polling in all 243 assembly seats will decide whether Janata Dal (United) chief Nitish Kumar – the state’s longest-serving chief minister – will secure a fifth consecutive term or whether a change in government will be witnessed.

The state registered a historic voter turnout of 67.13% in the two-phase elections to the 243-member assembly that was held on November 6 and 11.
