TVP WORLD Baerbock: UN majority will insist on respect for Ukraine’s territorial integrity | On The Record

“The vast majority of member states of the United Nations has been crystal clear since the Russian invasion: the right of your own sovereignty and territorial integrity is the right to every country. It’s reflected in upcoming resolutions,” says Annalena Baerbock, President of the United Nations General Assembly, in response to a report that the Trump administration is pushing to remove references to Ukraine’s “territorial integrity” and Russian “aggression” from an annual UN resolution.

The former German foreign minister tells TVP World’s On the Record that if the UN Security Council remains deadlocked by vetoes, it is the General Assembly that must “stand up” to defend the UN Charter, which protects smaller countries from aggression by larger neighbor’s.

Baerbock said that expanding of the UN Security Council and limiting veto power of individual members would make the UN fit for the new times. “The UN is a guarantor for peace and security… And if the Security Council is not capable, because of the [Russian] veto, then it’s the General Assembly which has to stand up. Every country in the world, including Ukraine, has a right to its own territory — and nobody is allowed to invade.”

She also stressed that many nations fear setting a precedent where a large neighbor’s attack could be legitimized by the UN. “The vast majority of heads of states [at the general assembly in October] underlined that the United Nations, that the charter, is their life insurance because most of the countries do have a bigger neighbor, and they know if they would accept the violation of international law, if they would tolerate a war of aggression, then no country could sleep in future in silence.”
