Despite the ship’s 50th anniversary generating renewed interest in solving the enduring mystery, the Canadian government has refused new dive permits for 30 years, honoring the families’ wishes to protect the grave site. Historians agree that although the submerged wreck remains perfectly intact and the clues are preserved, the dive ban ensures the Fitzgerald’s secrets will remain 535 feet below the surface.
