Residents of Kano, Nigeria expressed strong skepticism on Thursday after US President Donald Trump threatened potential military action over alleged persecution of Christians in the country. Many Nigerians warned that Washington’s intentions may be driven by geopolitical and economic interests rather than humanitarian concern.
Public affairs analyst Idris Salisu Rogo claimed the US could be using Christian persecution as a “scapegoat” to justify interference. A civil society activist said that if the US really wanted to help Nigeria, it could provide training to its security forces. “If they want to support Nigeria, it is not necessary to come through an invasion or through the American military,” said Salisu Yusuf.
