The Suncheon Bay Wetland in Jeollanam-do, which has become a paradise for migratory birds, has welcomed the endangered hooded cranes again this year.

To create a safer habitat, the city of Suncheon has removed utility poles again after 16 years.

Reporter Yoo Seung-yong has the story.

[Report]

[“One, two, three!”]

As the rope is pulled, the utility pole falls over.

They are removing utility poles in the fields for the natural monument, the hooded cranes.

It is to help the hooded cranes that visit Suncheon Bay to winter safely without getting caught in the power lines.

[Noh Gwan-kyu/Mayor of Suncheon, Jeollanam-do: “Since hooded cranes have a habit of living in family groups, it is very necessary to expand their habitat here.”]

The first removal of utility poles in Suncheon Bay was in 2009.

The city removed over 280 utility poles that had been erected throughout Suncheon Bay, creating an eco-friendly agricultural area of 62 hectares where hooded cranes can feed safely.

As the risks decreased and food became abundant, the number of hooded cranes visiting Suncheon Bay also surged.

The number of hooded cranes in Suncheon Bay, which was 167 in 2006, increased to over 7,600 last year.

Due to the rapid increase in population and the resulting lack of habitat, an additional 49 utility poles will be removed this time, and the eco-friendly agricultural area will be expanded by another 50 hectares.

[Park Jin-young/President of the Ornithological Society of Korea: “By well protecting and managing the habitat, the wintering status of the hooded cranes continues to improve.”]

With half of the world’s hooded cranes now wintering in Suncheon Bay, which has transformed into a paradise for migratory birds, the changes in Suncheon Bay, which has chosen to coexist with nature, are gaining attention in terms of research on the migration routes and habitats of hooded cranes, as well as international cooperation for the protection of migratory birds.
