Plans to preserve 38 Oxley Road are not about memorialising any single leader, but to protect a key piece of Singapore history for future generations. Acting Culture, Community and Youth Minister David Neo stressed this in a ministerial statement, regarding the site of founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew’s home. He told MPs that the government will consider all options, as it strives for a solution that unites — and not divides — its people. Earlier this week, the government said it intends to gazette 38 Oxley Road as a national monument, which means the site cannot be redeveloped for residential, commercial or other private use.
