US aviation administration to reduce air traffic at 40 airports amid government shutdown
The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration said Wednesday that it would reduce air traffic by 10 per cent across 40 “high-volume” markets beginning Friday morning to maintain safety during the ongoing government shutdown.
Air traffic controllers have been working unpaid since the shutdown began Oct. 1. “They have a child or two or three, and when they lose income, they are confronted with real-world difficulties in how they pay their bills,” said Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy.
FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford said that their goal was to manage “the airspace in the safest manner possible” amid pay cuts.
Bedford added that in addition to the reduction in air traffic capacity, “there will be additional measures that will be taken.”
