A group trying to collect insurance money by deliberately causing traffic accidents is recruiting accomplices through social media as if they were hiring part-time workers.
Young people are getting involved in these fraudulent crimes with the promise of big money.
Reporter Park Chan has the story.
[Report]
[“The speed limit is 50 km/h.”]
A vehicle gradually reduces its speed.
The car following it slows down and moves to the adjacent lane, but the motorcycle does not reduce its speed and crashes into the vehicle, toppling over.
[“What the…”]
A vehicle traveling in the straight lane.
Even though a car making a left turn can be seen from a distance, it does not slow down and crashes into it.
This was all part of a fraudulent scheme aimed at collecting insurance money.
Those who caused the accidents were recruited through social media.
Here is a post on social media recruiting for ‘high-paying part-time jobs.’
They are looking for ‘attackers’ and claim to guarantee payment.
They are recruiting people to cause accidents for insurance fraud.
Most of those involved in these crimes through social media recruitment were young people in their 20s and 30s.
They planned their crimes through intermediaries and Telegram.
After verifying the target’s insurance company, they instructed them to crash into the front of the vehicle.
Since the special law on insurance fraud was revised and implemented in August last year, these intermediaries can also be punished.
As a result of a focused investigation into insurance fraud, more than 3,600 people have been referred for investigation in just over a year.
[Lee Hwan-gwon/Head of Insurance Investigation Team, Financial Supervisory Service: “Previously, insurance fraud typically occurred among acquaintances, but now people are getting involved in insurance fraud after being lured by false advertisements for part-time jobs on social media.”]
The Financial Supervisory Service warned that even posting content that lures people into insurance fraud on social media can lead to punishment, even if one does not participate in the fraud.
