He grew up in Chennai and made his debut in Tamil cinema but Hyderabad is now his home and he has carved a niche for himself in the Telugu film industry. Actor, writer and director Rahul Ravindran, who won a National Award for his debut directorial Chi La Sow in 2018, is back with his third film, The Girlfriend, starring Rashmika Mandanna. Rahul talks about how he conceived this story, which is about Bhooma and relationships, more than a decade ago and how it is contemporary and relevant. The director reveals what it was like working with Rashmika Mandanna who is now the top female star in South India and how she brought to life the character of Bhooma. When asked if the failure of his second film, Manmadhudu 2, affected him he candidly replies he was gutted but how he pulled himself together and moved on in his life. Hearing about the comparisons of The Girlfriend with Vijay Deverakonda’s Arjun Reddy, Rahul states that it was not an antithesis to Arjun Reddfy which was a game breaker in Telugu cinema.
